Today is the 25th anniversary of the release of Apple’s first Newton MessagePad!
Indeed it is on August 3, 1993 that Apple officially launched the Newton MessagePad, this took place during the Macworld show which had taken place in the big Symphony Hall in the center of Boston. Apple had this event with great care as usual. In the hall, life-size demonstrations were made to present Newton’s abilities in real-life situations, all in a joyful festive atmosphere and with the aim of promoting Newton. All, I mean all the visitors of this MacWorld had only one desire, to leave with its specious sesame, a Newton. That’s not the $700 introductory price they were going to get, certainly not!

« Isaw it. I did It. Iwant it. » was the most pronounced words at the show. And if you had forgotten that motto, a badge distributed to anyone who wanted it was there to remind you. Visitors literally rushed to the some 4,000 Newtons that were available for the show. Apple’s new product was eagerly awaited, the announcement of its release had been well orchestrated on the front, because behind the scenes, the Newton team had been mistreated. The day before the show and part of the night, they were still busy perfecting the Newtons and his system. Attention to detail was always a concern, even if Steve Job had not been with Apple for several years, replaced by John Sculley, perfectionism was always present. It was a great party, everyone wanted to have a Newton or at least see and touch him for the less fortunate. It was like when the Macintosh 128 came out, the excitement was so palpable.

En effet c’est le 3 aout 1993 qu’Apple a officiellement lancé le Newton MessagePad, cela c’est déroulé pendant le salon Macworld qui avait eu lieu dans le grand Symphony Hall au centre de Boston. Apple avait cet événement avec grands soins comme à son habitude. Dans le salon, des démonstrations grandeur nature étaient faites pour présenter les capacités du Newton dans des situations réels, tout cela dans une joyeuse atmosphère de fête et dans le but de promouvoir le Newton. Tous, je dis bien tous les visiteurs de cette MacWorld n’avait qu’une seule envie, repartir avec son spécieux sésame, un Newton. Ce n’est pas le prix de lancement de $700 qu’y allait les retenir, certes non !

Les visiteurs se sont littéralement rués sur les quelques 4.000 Newton qui étaient disponibles pour le salon. Le nouveau produit d’Apple était très attendu, l’annonce de sa sortie avait été bien orchestrée en façade, car dans les coulisses, la team Newton à été bien malmenée. La veille du salon et une partie de la nuit, ils s’affairaient encore à parfaire les Newton et son système. Le soucis du détail était toujours de mise, même si Steve Job n’était plus chez Apple depuis plusieurs années, remplacé par John Sculley, le perfectionnisme était toujours présent. Ce fut une grande fête, tout le monde voulait avoir un Newton ou au moins le voir et le toucher pour les moins chanceux. On se serait cru à l’époque de la sortie du Macintosh 128, tellement l’engouement était palpable.
